Renewable Natural Gas Facility
As manufacturers seek new and better ways to optimize operations and improve their overall sustainability profiles, industries are turning to investments in breakthrough technologies in alternative fuels like renewable natural gas (RNG). RNG can be produced from a variety of sources and processes, including biogas from anaerobic digestion of food and beverage waste, so distilleries and related producers are looking to renewable fuels to provide power, minimize waste streams, and decarbonize their distillation processes.
Lummus Consultants provided independent engineering services to support the financing of a renewable fuels project based on anaerobic digestion using liquid stillage from a distillery in Kentucky. The project receives feedstock in the form of liquid whole stillage from the distillery and produces pipeline-grade RNG as well as conditioned digestate, a liquid fertilizer of commercial value to local farmers.
The scope of work included technical, environmental, and social due diligence services on behalf of potential lenders and investors. Lummus Consultants evaluated the technical and environmental detail of the project, the execution plans, and projected operations strategy. The project was constructed under a design, build, own and operate structure, saving the distillery on the capital investment while supplying the fuel needed to grow operations.
Of particular importance was the design and technology of the anaerobic digestion process and the biogas upgrade plant, including removal of impurities such as sulfur (H2S, mercaptans and disulfides), volatile organic compounds, carbon dioxide, and water. The experience and capabilities of the construction contractors and relevant vendors — mainly concerning the anaerobic digestion and biogas upgrade plant — were essential to our assessment. We reviewed modifications to reduce operating costs, highlighting the need to provide and store critical spare parts to optimize the plant’s reliability.
Lummus Consultants was subsequently selected to provide construction monitoring and startup services on behalf of project lenders.
